ABOUT PAXOS

Located in the Ionian Sea, just off the coast of Corfu, the island is surrounded by rugged coastlines, green landscapes, secluded beaches and clear blue seas, making it of Greece’s best kept secrets. Precisely because of this, the island has been ignored by the mass market. There are only a handful of small hotels so accommodation tends to be apartments or villas, and the pace is unhurried and relaxing. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit — you can swim here until the end of October.

Paxos is an island of endless olive groves and Antipaxos one large vineyard. The eastern coastlines of the island are smooth, while the west coasts are bold and abrupt with remarkable natural formations: caves, arches, dome-shaped forms, sheer cliffs etc. The capital of Paxos is Gaios, a picturesque village build around a port which is protected by two small islands, Agios Nikolaos and Panagitsa. At the northern tip of the island sits beautiful Lakka, whilst on the east coast nestles the charming village of Loggos. Today, Paxos has a permanent population of approximately 2,300 inhabitants and during the summer months, the island welcomes more than 200,000 visitors.

As Paxos is so tiny, exploring its trio of contrasting traditional villages — the ports of Gaios, Lakka and Loggos — was an easy hop by car from one to another in just 15 minutes.

The inhabitants of Paxos are warm and extremely hospitable people who possess a love for tradition yet embrace all developments of contemporary Europe. As a result the islands have been declared Cultural Village of Europe for the year 2004, an institution which aims to make know and preserve village life across Europe.

Voutoumi and vrika are the twi main beaches of the island located on the northern end of Amtipxos while you will find isolated a secluded coves on the southern coast of the island. Hiking enthusiasts can follow the footpath that crosses the island from one end to the other starting from the gulf of Vrika. Antipaxis is accessible by a short boat ride from Paxos.
